Preparing adb/fastboot drivers on a Windows computer
Step 1: Download the driver
Download from this page: http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.htmlExtract the zip file, the file that you want is called android_winusb.inf, notice where to find it.
Step 2: Install the driver
- Open a program on the computer called Device Manager. See notes below if you need help finding this program.
- Connect the Nexus device to the computer's USB port (preferably USB 2.0, you can find these as "white" USB ports). A new entry will pop up on Device Manager's middle pane, pay attention to find it (preferably this should be Other devices). Unplug and replug if you need to.
- Click on the triangle next to that new entry to expand it. Right click on the device name (likely to be Nexus 7 with a yellow exclamation mark) and select Update Driver Software.
See this screenshot for steps 2-3: http://i.imgur.com/LDMc4gP.png - Select Browse my computer for driver software and click Next.
- Select Browse... and go to the folder with the file android_winusb.inf, then click OK and continue to install the driver.
- search for it (hit Windows key and type in Device Manager), or
- right click the Start button (Windows 8.1 only, sorry) and choose Device Manager, or
- follow the steps below:
- Open a file browser, right click on "My Computer" or "This PC" or whatever that has the icon of a computer. Select Manage. See: http://i.imgur.com/lazF9YC.png
- On the left pane of the new window, find Device Manager or Devices if you're on Windows 7 or below. See: http://i.imgur.com/HmfM0gF.png
Moar Notes: I might do a video guide for this to show the sunny day scenario. Should be easier to follow as long as everything goes right for you.
